Asinara Island: An Untouched Gem of History and Nature
Discover Asinara's unique wildlife, pristine beaches, and captivating past on a journey through this Sardinian national park.
Off the northwest coast of Sardinia lies Asinara Island, a place where raw beauty meets a unique and storied past. Known as "Sardinia’s Alcatraz" for its days as a high-security prison, Asinara has transformed into a national park teeming with wildlife and pristine beaches. We decided to explore this fascinating island on a whim, and what began as a spontaneous ferry ride from Stintino turned into an unforgettable adventure.
A Scenic Tour Through the Island
We barely made the ferry from Stintino to Asinara, arriving just in time as the last passengers boarded. That rush was soon replaced with excitement, as the captains invited us to the bridge. To our delight, they even let us steer the ferry for a few moments—a special privilege that set the tone for the day. As the island grew larger on the horizon, we could feel a sense of anticipation building among the passengers, each of us ready to uncover the secrets of this remarkable place.
Once we docked at Cala Reale, Asinara’s main port, we opted for the mini-bus tour—a popular choice for visitors who want to see the island comfortably. Asinara is about 52 square kilometers with rugged, untouched terrain, and vehicles are limited to preserve its natural state. Alongside the mini-buses, visitors can also take a charming "trenino" (a mini-train), which winds through the island, or arrange for private boats or catamarans in the summer.
Our guide shared captivating tales of Asinara’s past, from its origins as a quarantine station to its later years as a maximum-security prison for notorious mafiosos and criminals. The island’s isolation made it an ideal location for Italy’s toughest prison, a contrast to the serene beauty that surrounds it today.
Wildlife Encounters: The Famous White Donkeys
Asinara is perhaps most famous for its unique inhabitants: the rare albino donkeys, or "asinelli bianchi." These white donkeys, thought to be descendants of North African donkeys, are one of the island’s icons. Spotting them felt almost magical, especially against the wild, untouched backdrop of Asinara. They roam freely alongside other animals like wild boars, rabbits and goats.
Our guide explained that these donkeys adapted over generations to their surroundings and Asinara remains one of the few places in the world where they can be seen. Seeing the donkeys, with their distinctive white coats and gentle, curious nature, was a highlight for us, and we took plenty of photos to capture the moment.
Planning Your Trip to Asinara: Tips and Recommendations
Getting There: Ferries to Asinara operate from Stintino and Porto Torres. It’s best to check schedules in advance, especially during peak tourist season, as ferry times can vary. In the summer, you also have the option to take a private boat or catamaran for a unique perspective of the island.
Tour Options: For a guided experience, the mini-bus tour is ideal and allows you to cover more ground comfortably. The "trenino" mini-train is a slower, scenic option, great for families. If you’re interested in a more private experience, consider a boat tour, which can provide access to hidden beaches and coves.
Wildlife and Nature: Asinara is a protected national park, so respecting the wildlife and natural landscape is essential. The island’s diverse ecosystem is home to many species, including the albino donkeys, wild boars, and rare birds, making it a unique destination for nature lovers.
Activities: Beyond the tours, Asinara offers hiking trails, snorkeling, and opportunities to explore the coast. Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the island’s facilities are limited.
